These black basalt statues (which are on the outside of St George’s Dock Ventilation Station, one of the shafts for Queensway Mersey tunnel) are amongst my favourite “hidden” features of Liverpool – there’s something intrisically cool about them.
There are two statues, this one represents Day and another, oddly enough, representing Night – both the work of sculptor Edmund C. Thompson.
This photo was taken at night, I think the lighting from above gives the statues a more dramatic air.

I love these statues and never knew about them until four years ago. A great little secret in such a well known area of Liverpool.
