Late Night Liverpool

And now, for something completely different – from the sunrise view to a night time view of the Liverpool waterfront. I normally try and follow ‘the rules’ of dusk/night photography and capture photos when there is still some light in the sky but this one was taken later on – it’s good to break the rules now and then.

Some non-waterfront shots coming up soon, promise…

Old versus New IV

Fourth in the series – the Port of Liverpool building is framed in a mesh window under the Latitude building.

Old versus New III

Third in a series of comparisons between the old buildings on the Liverpool waterfront and the new – here Albion House is reflected in the Latitude building at Mann Island.

Albion House is also known as The White Star Building – apparently in 1912, after the news of the sinking of the Titanic got back to Liverpool, the company’s management were too afraid to leave the building and instead read the names of the dead from the balcony.

Old versus New II

The Port of Liverpool and a Liverbird reflected in the glass curves of the new Museum of Liverpool. I’ve not been in for a look around yet and will definitely be leaving it until the summer holidays have finished before I do but the reviews I’ve seen have so far been mostly positive.

Out of the new buildings, the museum seems to me to ‘fit’ the best so far. Whether that’s due to the colouring of the building blending into the new waterfront whereas the black buildings are a tad stark or just down to the fact that the museum isn’t as high and doesn’t block as many views I don’t know….

Old versus New I

First in a series of old versus new shots featuring the new buildings at Mann Island on the Liverpool waterfront.

On the left hand side is the Latitude building, one of the new constructions and on the right is the Port of Liverpool building.

The new buildings have proved to be controversial to say the least – the waterfront has UNESCO World Heritage site status – local Liverpool gadabouts SevenStreets have mocked up a slideshow showing how the Mann Island development would look dumped in front of sites conferred similar status and provoked quite strong positive and negative comments about the new buildings.

Personally, I think that how these buildings are utilised will help or hinder them ‘settling in’ to the waterfront – if the buildings are full of people and life then hopefully they’ll help to connect the waterfront together (the waterfront walk from the Pier Head to the Albert Dock was shut for far too long to accomodate the new buildings). However, if they remain empty with the offices and apartments bought as investment opportunities only then I worry about them becoming a rattly white elephant. Only time will tell I suppose.

Maritime Museum

I know all the fuss has been about the new museum of Liverpool recently but I’ve not had chance to check that out yet so here’s a shot of the Maritime Museum from the archives instead – taken on a misty winters evening, it was so cold that the pavements were like an ice rink. I made sure I stayed well away from the edge!

UKD Orca

View from Otterspool prom down towards the Stanlow oil refinery. The ship in the photo is the UKD Orca, a dredging/underwater ops type, 78m by 16m by 4.5m. I know all this because I was watching the ship move in what looked like pre-determined paths up and down the river and I was wondering what it was doing – then I remembered this site. It lists all the ships currently on the river, shows where they are and where they’ve just been. Very clever – isn’t technology brilliant!

Anyway, back to the photo – I particularly like how this came out due to the layering in the image – the stormy clouds at the top, the ship and the oil refinery in the middle and the texture of the river at the bottom. I did think about processing this in black and white but the little bit of colour in the image adds to it I think.

In the roaring traffics boom

These black basalt statues (which are on the outside of St George’s Dock Ventilation Station, one of the shafts for Queensway Mersey tunnel) are amongst my favourite “hidden” features of Liverpool – there’s something intrisically cool about them.

There are two statues, this one represents Day and another, oddly enough, representing Night – both the work of sculptor Edmund C. Thompson.

This photo was taken at night, I think the lighting from above gives the statues a more dramatic air.
