How Do We Sleep?

I found out this week from my friend p3dro’s blog that Turning The Place Over is turning no more. A real shame but it was only ever designed to be online for a year and lasted from June 2007 until earlier this month. I’m not sure of it’s artistic values but as a piece of engineering it was incredible.

First attempt at video below – shot on Nikon D90. The video shows the speed that TTPO used to rotate at.

Synclastic Anticlastic

Hector Zamora’s Synclastic/Anticlastic Biennial installation at Mann Island features 170 concrete manta rays suspended (flying? floating?) from the ceiling. Out of the Biennial work I’ve seen so far, this is my favourite.

I visited quite late on in the day and it was completely empty which gave the whole thing a very eerie air – the rays sway very gently in the breeze and it’s vaguely unsettling.

Bridging Home, Do Ho Suh

Do Ho Suh’s Bridging Home is nestled between two buildings on Duke Street – the best explanation of this work I can find is that it’s showing the artist’s dual culture Korean-American upbringing. I love the detail in this work and the fact that, like the Futurist installation, it’s really quite subtle. I stood on the other side of the road and watched as some people walked past blissfully unaware and some people caught the house out of the corner of their eye and stopped and stared.

Think About Your Futurist

Emese Benczùr’s Biennial piece at the Futurist Cinema, Liverpool – another of the fantastic old buildings sat rotting away in Liverpool. Lime Street generally seems to have been left to rot, which is odd considering how many millions have been spent on the Lime Street Station gateway, only for the first buildings that a visitor comes across are the likes of this.

Usual “old buildings rotting away” rant aside, it’s nice to see the Biennial using the existing surroundings like this, I like the subtle art that the Biennial brings to the city, it’s clever (and thought provoking, natch). Apparently this is lit up at night, not been down that way evening time for a while so if I get chance to snap it lit up this may make another appearance before the Biennial is over.

The University of Liverpool’s Engineering Department is currently lit up like the St.Georges Cross for the World Cup – it’s normally setup to fade through a series of colours. It looks absolutely fantastic – hopefully they’ll have reason to leave it on after today – come on England!

Web of Light Panoramic, Exchange Flags

One I’ve dug out from the archives – I loved this installation (which is why I’ve got loads of photos of it!) Exchange Flags is one of my favourite places in Liverpool to photograph and it’s great to see it being used more and more – it’s stood empty for far too long.

Second shot of the new wheel on the waterfront – still disappointed it’s not the other way round so it’ll be more visible from the Wirral side (the Liverpool One wheel was mostly obscured by other buildings) but no-one ever thinks of the photographers….

The Echo Wheel of Liverpool

One of two shots of the wheel I managed to get before being moved on by Arena security (very politely, it must be said.) The wheel is 60 metres (thanks to Wallacemarino for the correction) high and you’re supposed to be able to see all the way to Wales on a good day – not been on yet so I’ll reserve judgement.

I can’t make my mind up whether this looks better in colour or black and white, so have a look at the mono version here.
